5 Common Misconceptions About Moving and Professional Movers

Moving to a new houseBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Moving is a big project. It requires a lot of planning, effort, and coordination to make everything go smoothly.

Of course, as with many industries, there are a ton of misconceptions around the concept of moving — and whether you should hire professional movers or not. Let's talk about 5 common myths and see how they stack up to reality.

Misconception #1: All Moves are Disorganized

Some people have the idea that a relocation is going to be a chaotic, disorganized event no matter what. Maybe they dread the thought of cardboard boxes haphazardly strewn about the house, or they don't trust their own organization skills.

Whatever the case may be, the truth is that your move can be organized - if you put forth a little effort. That means labeling your boxes, keep items in the same category together, and planning out what gets packed and loaded, and when. Professional movers can help you keep things tidy throughout the moving process with their many supplies and years of experience.

Misconception #2: The Movers Will Break my Items

Many individuals getting ready to relocate are nervous that their moving company will break their items; and they are especially worried about valuable possessions, fragile items, and treasured heirlooms.

The truth is a reliable, experienced, and professional moving company will treat your possessions with the greatest care and respect. Of course, you can do your part by pointing out fragile items to your moving crew ahead of time and giving your movers some direction as to which boxes to leave for you to transport. If you do your due diligence and make sure to hire a reputable moving company, you can rest assured that your items will be in safe hands.

Misconception #3: Duct Tape/Masking Tape Works as Well as Packing Tape

It's true that duct tape is a strong adhesive. However, duct tape and other types of tape (like masking tape) are not specifically designed to adhere to cardboard. In fact, some tape may start peeling minutes after application.

In contrast, packing tape is designed for use with cardboard, which means it's the best choice for securing your cartons during a move. If you use the right kind of tape during the packing process, you can have peace of mind that your possessions will stay safe during transit.

Misconception #4: Friday is the Best Day to Move

The reasoning behind this theory is that you'll have the entire weekend to unpack before you have to go back to work. And it's true, there are some advantages to moving on Friday.

The problem is, most other people who are moving think this way, too. That means if you decide to move on Friday, you may end up paying a premium for moving help, especially if that Friday is during the summer months. It may be cheaper to pick an off-peak time for your move. Of course, no matter what day you end up choosing, make sure you book your moving company as far in advance as possible.

Misconception #5: All Moving Companies are the Same

This is not true. Moving companies vary greatly in terms of pricing, quality of service, availability, and experience. Hiring inexperienced or unscrupulous movers can cost you big-time. On the other hand, if you work with a good moving company, not only your relocation will go smoothly, but you may end up saving valuable time and money in the process.
