Should You Move During the COVID-19 Crisis?

Getting ready to move - washing handsBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

You were planning on moving, but now the world is in lockdown due to a pandemic. Is it still advisable for you to continue with the move? The answer to this question is not a simple “yes” or “no”. You need to look at several factors, so read on to learn more.

Obviously, some people may have no alternative but to move; if your lease is coming up and you already agreed to move out, your landlord may charge prohibitive month-to-month rent (in some states, evictions have been halted but rent payments are still required). Or, your new employer needs you on site. Or, you are closing on your house and must be out by a certain date. In these cases, you need to work with your professional mover to keep your move on schedule.

When Should You Not Move?

If you have symptoms or have been ordered to quarantine, you will have to hold off on moving at least until the 14-day quarantine limit is over. If your community is under shelter-in-place, you may not be able to move until it is over. Discuss this scenario with your moving company, as they will be up to date on any local rules. In addition, if you’re in a high-risk category, such as individuals over age 65 and those who are immune compromised, it may be best to postpone your move to a later date.

When is it Okay to Move?

Basically, if you and everyone in your household is healthy, and there are no local or statewide regulations indicating otherwise, it is okay to move. Although, you will want to discuss precautionary measures with your professional mover in order to keep you, your family and the moving crew safe.

What Should You Do Differently?

There are a few things you should do differently:

  1. Maintain your distance. It’s possible to practice social distancing even when the moving crew is at your home.
  2. Make sure you know what the moving company's policies are. Some moving companies are asking for specific extra things, such as opening windows or leaving out soap.
  3. Avoid using used packing materials. New boxes, tape, packing paper and other supplies should be utilized.
  4. Communication is the key to keeping everyone safe. If during the move, anyone in your home is exhibiting any symptoms of illness or may have been exposed to the virus, let your moving company know right away. They will work with you to either reschedule your move or come up with an alternate plan that will work for all involved.

If you are planning on moving, be aware that you might have to delay your move until the crisis is over. Yes, this may be several months, but if it means keeping your family safe, it’s worth it. If you do go ahead, A-1 Freeman Moving Group is here to help. We are talking all necessary precautions to ensure that your move can go smoothly with minimal risk of anyone catching COVID-19. It can be done, and we can do it.

Best. Move. Ever!
Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
