Moving Quotes: An Apples to Apples Comparison

MovingBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Whether you are moving your household to another place in town, or you are taking your business across the country, choosing the right moving company is key to a successful relocation. To start your estimate process right, get 4-5 estimates and then make an apples to apples comparison. By reviewing your quotes to ensure the same inclusions, you will save time and money, and you will avoid any scams or unscrupulous moving charges. Here are some items to look for when comparing your moving estimates.

Weight, Mileage, and Hours

Check the parameters of your quotations to ensure that they are all for the same estimated weight, mileage, number of workers, and projected hours. If you are getting quotes for a long-distance move, make sure that you are quoting with long distance movers and not a moving company who cannot move goods interstate. Calculations for number of workers and hours may differ based on the company. Some movers will charge a flat rate for up to a certain number of hours, and then charge an hourly rate per person for every hour thereafter. This can result in an expensive hike in your moving costs. In addition, mileage should be clearly indicated and calculated for all quotes, to ensure that there is no per-mile addition to the quote after the fact.

Storage, Insurance, and Additional Services

When comparing your quotes, check for additional services that do not exist in all your estimates. You cannot make a valid apples-to-apples comparison if one quotation includes packing and materials, and the others do not. Keep an eye out for any other add-ons, such as insurance coverage, storage time and space, mileage and fuel. If all the quotes are structured the same way, with the same inclusions, you are less likely to be taken in by a mover who offers a low quoted rate and then nickels and dimes you with hidden fees and extras. If mileage or fuel rates are to be added, be sure that the quoted rates are in the same range on all quotes.

Other Things to Look Out For

When reviewing your moving estimates, be wary of very high or very low quotes. You should have a spread of 4-5 quotations, to give you a clear idea of the average rate for your move. If a quote is significantly lower than the rest, check to be sure that the parameters of that quote match the others, and that there are no additional fees, mileage charges, or hourly rate limits that will increase the cost once your move is underway. Likewise, if a quote is significantly higher than the others, make sure they are not overestimating hours or mileage, and that they haven't added services or products that are not present in the other quotations. Check to be sure that all your moving companies have adhered to any licensing regulations, and that they are quoting enough manpower to complete the move in a timely fashion. Remember, if an estimate sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Ask Questions and Don't Hesitate to Ask for Revisions

If you find that you are not able to make an accurate comparison because some or all your quotations have inconsistent services, don't be afraid to reach out to the moving companies with specific revisions to the quotes. This is your move, and it is important that you have all the information you need in order to make the best decision. Ask for a copy of each quotation in writing, so that you can easily make comparisons. Double check that all your quotes have the same terms. Finally, check reviews online. Former customers will often leave good and bad reviews, including information about hidden fees or items they overlooked in their own quotes. Checking the reviews is a good final step before you decide on an estimate.

Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
