How to Start Packing for Your Move

Packing for a MoveBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Packing isn't easy for everybody. It may be challenging to get started, or to know the place to start. You could prefer to do your own packing but discover the task really intimidating when you begin with the very first box. How do you get the total home into boxes and then loaded into a single truck? If you aren't sure where to start, when to begin, or how to pack your stuff - you're in the right place.

From handling your very first move to packing when you are too overwhelmed to think, these straightforward suggestions from professional movers will help you start placing one box on top of another until your house is packed and ready to go.

Start with Cartons and a Permanent Marker

Get started with that first box. Get a bunch of 'Medium' packing cartons along with a permanent marker. Get started with the areas you use least, like the attic or den. Clear drawers into cartons (with padding, as needed) and label the carton for its contents. Then begin the process of yet another box. Then another. Clear out your off-season clothing straight into one box along with your backup toiletries into another. Clear out your books and desk drawers to one box as well as your less used cooking pans into yet another.

One box at a time, label by label, your home is going to get packed.

Split Up Your Packing into Manageable Sections

If packing the whole residence seems like a big job, break it up. Pack your home office to begin with, or everything in your dresser that you do not put on weekly. Pack up your storage areas, they might be actually half-packed anyway. Section your home into areas, leaving your most-used things for last. Take on packing one evening and weekend at a stretch and congratulate yourself on hitting goals.

Eliminate Stuff You Do Not Need

Moving is an ideal time to remove your personal property of whatever you do not need or don't wish to bring together with you. The many shirts you don't ever wear, the pans you don't ever prepare food with, or the furniture too worn out to be worth the truck space can get kicked to the curb or - better still - donate them. There might be a young couple who desperately needs an older durable sofa or perhaps a family who could really use that extra bed.

Get rid of items you have no need for. Whatever you will not miss in the new house is a candidate to lessen your load and reduce the total you will need to pack.

Allow Yourself Ample Time

If you're not a professional mover, start early. Most people can't pack their house over a long weekend, or even over three or four weekends. Thus, allow lots of lead-up time for you to pack the residence - and know when it is time to bring in the moving company reinforcements should you merely do not make enough progress before your moving date draws near. This is common, not everyone is a packing machine.

Work with Professional Movers

Professional movers are an important aid if you are preparing for a move. Many people hire movers to pack just their big household furniture and the majority of delicate objects, having faith in their expertise to ensure these items arrive at the new house securely. You may also rely on professional movers to take you beyond the finish line if your personal moving initiatives are not quite finished when moving-truck day arrives.
