Feel Your Best While Moving

Packing for a moveBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

As professional movers, we know that the summer months are the time for most people to move. The weather is nice, the kids are out of school, and it's one of the easiest times to make a fresh start in a new place. And with plenty of sunshine and warm breezes, it seems like staying healthy would be easy enough to do during a summer move.

Unfortunately, though, that isn't always the case.

If you're moving, and you don't want to find yourself under the weather while you're doing it, keep some of these tips in mind.

Tip #1: Use the Right Equipment

When you think of lifting straps, weight belts, and wrist braces, chances are good you're imagining the clanking weights of a gym. Well, moving is a similar activity, but with a purpose, which is why you need to make sure you don't hurt yourself (or your stuff) when moving it from one residence to another.

That's why you should be sure you have gloves (to get a good grip and to keep your hands from drying out), braces (if you're lifting particularly heavy items you should brace your wrists and back, as well as your knees if they're at risk), and shoes that give you cushion and comfort without presenting a hazard (long laces that you can trip over, a fit that isn't comfortable, etc.). It's also a good idea to use dollies or a hand cart to carry particularly heavy items to save your back.

Or, if you are hiring a professional moving company, they'll make sure to have all the right equipment, so you don't have to fret about it.

Tip #2: Eat and Drink Regularly

It's easy to let your schedule get away from you when you're moving, but it's important to make sure you're staying hydrated and eating regularly. You should drink water (with an occasional sports drink, if you really need it), and make sure that you aren't loading up on caffeine and sugar as those things will just dehydrate you more. Additionally, don't just eat fast food. While your kitchen might be packed up, it's important to make sure you're getting plenty of healthy meals, as well as fruits and vegetables, the same as if you were going about your regular routine.

Tip #3: Sleep

Moving is stressful, there's no two ways about it. That can eat away at your peace of mind and keep you up at night. While it might seem tough, it's important for your health to get enough sleep. That means you should take time in the evening to relax, avoid drinking caffeine, and go through a relaxation routine. Maybe even some meditation. Whatever you need to do to wind down, so you can get your rest, you need to do that to keep up your strength and concentration while you're moving.

Tip #4: Move A Bit at A Time

Nothing is more stressful (or makes you expend more energy) than trying to move all at once. That's why, if possible, you should schedule your energy and your tasks. Plan out what you need to pack by what date and get the help you need to move at a steady pace. You're less likely to injure yourself that way, it cuts down on your stress, and makes it less likely you'll injure yourself at some stage of the moving process.

Tip #5: Keep an Eye on The Weather and Temperature

No matter what season you're moving in, constant fluctuations in temperature, as well as being out in adverse weather, can take its toll on your immune system. It won't make you sick in and of itself if you load up your moving van in the rain, or if you're constantly going from chilly air conditioning into hot, steamy outdoor weather, but it is going to zap your strength. Be mindful of things like that and try to minimize your exposure when you can.

And remember that the professional movers at A-1 Freeman Moving Group are at your service to assist with any portion of the moving process that you would like so that you can stay healthy.

Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
