Questions to Ask When Getting a Moving Quote

Getting a moving quoteBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Moving is a big deal. No matter whether you are moving across the street or across the country, there is a lot of work and details that need to be attended to. Hiring a professional mover can help alleviate some of the stress, but where do you even start in finding the right moving company for your needs? It’s important to talk to several movers and compare prices before signing a contract with just any moving company. However, it can be more complicated than just calling them and asking what they would charge for your move. Different moving companies have different levels of service and different services are included in their standard quote. So, it is crucial to examine each quote and take the time to understand what is and what is not included in them so that you can make an “apples-to-apples” comparison. Here are a few questions to ask as you are gathering and reviewing moving estimates.

1) What services are extra?

No one likes surprises when it comes to moving, especially when those surprises are in the form of charges on your bill. A huge mistake that many people make is assuming that everything you need is automatically included in your moving estimate. Go over each line of the quote and make sure that you understand what is and what is not included and verify that your needs are covered. If anything you need is not included, ask for it to be added to the estimate. Be sure to do this with every moving company you are considering hiring so you can effectively compare quotes.

2) What is the valuation of the goods?

Let’s face it. Professional movers are human and despite their best efforts, accidental damage can happen from time to time. Valuation can help cover the cost of repairing or replacing damaged items. Most moving companies offer different levels of valuation for your move with the lowest cost valuation package paying a flat rate per pound for damaged items, so make sure that you understand what level of valuation is included in your quote. It is a good idea to also contact your insurance agent to ask if your belongings might be covered throughout your move under your homeowner’s policy.

3) Is this a binding or non-binding estimate?

It’s always best to have either an in-person or video estimate so that the moving company estimator can see your belongings and estimate their weight and the number of boxes that you will need. If you get a binding estimate, it should include all charges and should help to ensure that your rate doesn’t exceed the quoted rate. If it isn’t something that you and the moving company representative have discussed, make sure and ask whether the quote is binding or non-binding.

4) What about payment?

It’s important to understand payment timing and also acceptable methods. Make sure and find out if you need to put down a deposit. It is not uncommon for moving companies to require a percentage of the total bill to be paid upon loading with the rest due after the job has been completed. Additionally, you’ll want to find out what payment methods the moving company accepts. Most companies accept credit cards, but some may require a check or cash. If you are paying by check, find out whether a personal check will be accepted or if you need a cashier’s check. The last thing you want is to be unprepared and have to run to the bank at the last minute, during an already hectic time.

We want you to feel completely comfortable with your choice of moving company, which is why we encourage you to ask as many questions as you would like. If you are ready to get started on your move, contact A-1 Freeman Moving Group today to request a quote.

Best. Move. Ever!
Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
