Moving Day is Next Week!

getting ready for a moveBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

What is that saying about time flying when you are having fun? Well, we aren’t sure if moving always counts as “fun”, but the time leading up to moving day sure does seem to disappear quickly. So, moving day is only a week away and you still have loose ends to time up. Hopefully, you have been preparing for moving day for the last few months and just need some pointers on what you should be doing the final week before your move. If so, read on….

Unplug

Now is the time to think about all the appliances that will be moving with you. Your refrigerator and freezer need time to defrost before your move, so you may want to go ahead and empty them out and unplug them. Some washers and dryers can simply be unplugged and moved, while others might need a professional to disconnect the gas line along with other preparations for transport. Talk to your moving company about the safest way to move these items. Also, don’t forget about your TV, modem and other electronics, as well.

Finish Packing

If your professional movers are packing for you, feel free to bypass this pointer, but if you are packing yourself, keep reading. By now, you have likely packed up all your non-essential items. This final week is the time to get going on some of the more essential things. Make sure to go through every closet and cabinet to be sure that you aren’t leaving anything behind. Now is also the time to double check the attic, basement, garage and shed. Any power tools as well as your lawnmower should be drained of fuel, as your moving company likely can’t transport them otherwise.

Put Together an Essentials Box

After a long day or few days of moving, the last thing you are going to want to do is dig through boxes to find items that you need for your first night in your new house. Put together an essentials box that contains things like toiletries, clean sheets, towels, kitchen essentials, toilet paper, basic cleaning supplies, etc.

You should also have a separate box or bag that contains items that you may need right up until moving day. This box or bag can contain items like medicines, change of clothes, snacks for the trip, etc.

Contact Your Utility Providers

Now would be a good time to contact your utility providers to alert them of your move. If you are moving close by, you may be able to just transfer your service from your old home to your new home. However, if your move is over a long distance, you will need to find out from your providers what you need to do to cancel or disconnect your service. You don’t want to be charged for utility usage at your old home after you have moved away.

Confirm with Your Movers

You should have already decided on a moving company and scheduled moving day, but now is a good time to contact your mover and confirm that everything is on schedule on their end. Double check and see if they need any new or additional information from you, and you can ask them any last-minute questions that are on your mind. If anything has changed on the items that you are planning to move, this would be a good time to alert your moving company about those items. The last thing anyone wants is surprises on moving day!
