This may seem like a given, but you'd be surprised how many times professional movers must deal with absent clients on moving day. Even if you can't be there due to an emergency, make sure that a responsible adult is present for the entire day (or days). Someone will need to answer the movers' questions, sign paperwork, and direct the packing/loading process as needed.
For your safety, the safety of the movers, and the safety of your possessions, it's important that you clear out a walkway that's wide enough to allow safe passage for your household furniture and other items. Be sure to remove all tripping hazards both inside and outside your home, including toys, clothes, tools, bags of trash, etc.
At the start of the day, you want to go through your house with the movers and point out items of special importance, fragile items, and items that won't be loaded onto the moving truck. Make sure your movers clearly understand and remember your instructions.
At the end of the day, it's a good idea to do a final walkthrough to make sure that all your possessions have been loaded, and that nothing has been left behind. This is a good time to check your drawers, cabinets, and closets for any items that may have been missed.
We all love our children and our "furry friends," but often, they slow things down when work needs to be done. That's not to mention how they may accidentally make themselves "trip hazards" by running around the house while the professional movers are carrying your boxes.
The point is, it's good to have a plan. If you have kids, try to keep them occupied with fun activities in a separate room, so that they're happy, busy, and out of the way. Or better yet, see if a relative or friend would be willing to watch them for the day. And if you have pets, it may be best to put them in a kennel or cage for a while or have someone take care of them for the duration of the packing and loading process.
Once your items are all packed and loaded on the moving truck, you still want them to get to your new home on time and in one piece. With that in mind, it's always a good idea to exchange your contact information with the moving company's driver. Make sure you and the driver are on the same page when it comes to the delivery schedule.
