Start Packing!

packing for a moveBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Moving can be overwhelming, especially when trying to figure out where to start. Maybe you're lost in all the to-do's and don't know what to do first, or maybe you know what you need to get done, but you're putting it off. While planning your move and making sure you take care of all your last-minute tasks are important, the most time-consuming part of moving is packing your things. The best advice you can ever receive when planning a move? Just start packing!

Get Rid of Things You Don't Need

The first step to packing is getting rid of things you don't need. This can be something you do at the beginning of your packing journey, but it will also be something you might find yourself having to do throughout. There are multiple ways to get rid of things you don't need. Donate, give to family and friends, sell, or toss unwanted items. Save yourself time and don't pack anything you don't see yourself using in your new space!

Gather Packing Supplies

Packing may seem like just throwing things in a box, but it can be much more involved than that. As you begin to pack each room, consider what items you have in that space that may be difficult to pack. Make sure that, in addition to basic packing supplies like tape, boxes, and markers, you also have bubble wrap and other tools you might need to safely pack everything you own. For example, it can be beneficial to get packing sleeves for dishes in your kitchen to protect them during your move. Special boxes for TVs and paintings can also be a huge help. Write down important items in each room that may need special supplies and then head down to your local hardware store or moving company!

Break Down Packing into Manageable Chunks

Packing can quickly become overwhelming, so don't try to do it all at once. Instead, break it down into manageable chunks. This could be trying to work in one room at a time or setting aside so much time per day to work. Whatever method works best for you, it is important to remember that you don't have to finish it all at once! Set up realistic expectations for packing up your home. Even a one-bedroom home can take around 3-5 days to completely pack up, even longer for multi-bedroom homes. Try to plan at least one day per room to give yourself time and avoid rushing to pack everything at the last minute.

Get Your Professional Mover to Pack the Difficult or Fragile Items

Did you know that professional movers can help you pack? If you're struggling to pack large, difficult, or fragile items, getting assistance from your movers can be a great help. Don't try to do it all yourself. A professional mover's goal is to help your move be as low stress for you as possible.

If you're about to move, consider hiring a professional mover to help reduce the stress on you and make packing easier.
