Planning a Big Move to a New State in 2022?

Packing for a moveBy Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Are you planning an out-of-state move in 2022? While moving to a new state can be exciting, it can also be extremely hectic. There's so much to plan and lots of traveling to do, especially if you happen to have kids or pets to tow along with you. Being a professional mover, we've helped with a lot of interstate moves, and we've created some tips to help make it a little less stressful for you.

1) Set A Reasonable Budget

Moving out of state can be very costly. While there are certain expenses you can't avoid, it helps if you set a reasonable moving budget and try to stick to it. Don't forget to include things like gas, food, and professional movers in your budget. And don't be too hard on yourself if you do go a little over-budget because things are bound to happen that you just can't predict.

2) Research Your New Neighborhood

A new home is much more than just a new house. When you sign your new lease, take the time to drive around and take a tour of your new neighborhood. Get to know where the local grocery stores and farmer's markets are located. If you're a parent, learn about the local school district and scout out some parks. Also, if you've got a pet, or are planning on getting one, you'll want to find a reliable vet clinic close by.

3) Choose Your Professional Moving Service

Whichever moving company you choose will be responsible for ensuring the safety of your belongings. It's extremely important to make sure that the movers you select have a reputation for being a highly rated and professional company. You also want a moving company with excellent customer service and communication. Set a schedule with them and make a delivery plan with your driver. Be sure to exchange phone numbers, so you can keep in contact with your movers.

4) Prep Your Vehicle

Take your vehicle in for regular maintenance before your moving day, such as an oil change and tire rotation. This can help you to avoid any mechanical issues during your journey to your new home. Also, make sure that your registration and insurance are up to date. A ticket is not the kind of welcome you want in your new state.

5) Transfer Your Driver's License

While most states will afford you a grace period to give you time to make the transfer, it's usually best if you just go ahead and get your license switched to your new state of residence. Check the DMV website for your new home. You might even be able to make the transfer online!

6) Plan Your Trip

Moving to a different state can be exhausting. Make sure you know ahead of time where you intend to stop overnight, and plan for plenty of rest stops to stretch your legs. If you're taking any pets along for the ride, you'll also have to schedule potty breaks for them. And don't forget to pack plenty of toys to keep your kids or pets entertained on the road.

7) Pack A Moving Bag for Everyone

Whether you're moving by yourself or with your family, be sure to pack a moving bag to take on the trip with you. This should include toiletries, several changes of clothes, any medication, important financial information, and chargers for your electronics. And anything else you can't live without for a few days, in case of any delays.

8) Pack Your Vehicle

You know you're going to be in your vehicle for at least a day or two. Prepare for the long drive by stocking up on snacks and drinks. Especially if you're traveling with your family, having everyone's favorites on hand will really help with those long miles in between rest stops and hotels. You should also keep some hand sanitizer in the car because, eventually, you will have to deal with public restrooms.

It's important to have a plan in place and to know your professional movers are trustworthy and reliable. Let A-1 Freeman Moving Group take some of the stress out of your state-to-state move, so you can enjoy the adventure as you start the next phase of your life.

Best. Move. Ever!
Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
